MEXICAN BEADED LIZARD

.Mexican Beaded Lizard are found in the thorn scrub and deciduous forests. It makes its home in abandoned mammal burrows, under the rocks or in tunnels they have dug. They frequently live near permanent water sources. These are carnivores and eat eggs, young birds, insects, lizards, snakes and rodents.

LIFE CYCLE:The breeding season is between February and March and about two months later. Females bury 3 to 13 elongated eggs about five inches deep. Incubation period is for about 28 to 30 days. Young ones are hatched at about 5 months. They reach sexual maturity within 2 to 3 years. Young ones are able to survive without parental support. These lizards have cylindrical bodies with wide, flat heads and short legs. They have white to yellow stripes and spots on their black, bumpy skin. They have powerful jaws and razor-sharp teeth, which either slash or grip to chew the victim’s grooves in the teeth. Adults are 57 to 91 cms in length and their average body mass is 800 gms. The Males are slightly larger than the females. They are stocky and not sexually dimorphic Mexican Beaded Lizard can live for more than 30 years.
