HOUSE LIZARDS

These House Lizards are found on boulders, beneath the rocks or on rotting logs and trees. But it is most commonly found in buildings. It is usually found close to electric lights at dusk. They are Often seen near lights,preying for flying insects, such as moths. They feed on crickets, fruit flies, grasshoppers, spiders, silkworms, mealworms and other small insects. Common lizards only feed heavily for100 to 130 days in a year.They feed for a further 40 to 75 days when the temperatures are cooler. So, for more than half the year, they do not feed fat at all.

LIFE CYCLE:The Female lizards lay several clutches of two hard shelled, non-adhesive eggs and hides them in cracks and crevices during summer. Eggs are oval in shape and white in colour. Eggs hatch between 50 to 65 days. The hatched tiny lizards attain sexual maturity within a year. The male and the female mate during summer and the female lays 2 eggs approximately every four to six weeks. The common House Lizard generally are dark-brown in colour with a complex pattern of stripes and lines running the whole length of their body. They range in colour from pale, whitish pinkish colour to shades of grey. They have large eyes, vertical pupils and lack eyelids. Adults usually grow to 13 to 15 cms in total length and males can grow up to 20cms. The lifespan of the common lizard is approximately 5 years.
