FRILLED-NECKED LIZARD

Frilled Necked lizard spends most of its time in the trees, or on the floor searching for food or are engaged in territorial conflicts. Insects like spiders, ant, and termites are its main diet. Rarely, they feed on small vertebrates, cicadas, beetles and mice. The Frilled-necked Lizard is also known as the frilled agama, frilled dragon or frilled lizard. It is a species of lizard in the family Agamidae.

LIFE CYCLE:Frilled-necked lizards breed in the early wet season from September to October. One to two clutches of 6 to 25 eggs are laid from early to mid-wet season from November to February. The eggs are laid in a nest 5 to 20cm below the ground and usually in sunny areas. Each egg weighs 3 to 5 grams. Their eggs are soft-shelled. The eggs hatch in 8 to 12 weeks. Incubation takes two to three months. Hatchling lizards are 6 to 7cm in length. Young ones are darker in colour. The adult male is generally larger than the female. Adults grow to an overall length of 70 to 95 cms and their tails can grow to a length of 60 cms. The average body mass of an adult lizard is 500g. It is usually mottled grey, brown or reddish-brown in colour. These lizards which survive into to adulthood, probably has a lifespan of 6 to 20 years.
