COLLARED LIZARDS

One of the interesting facts about this lizard is its eating habits. Not only do they eat insects such as grasshoppers and crickets but they also eat other lizards, including other collared lizards. Collared lizards are found in a wide variety of habitats including sagebrush, desert scrub, pinyon-juniper and desert grasslands.Collared Lizard is also known as eastern collared lizard. They have large heads, barrel-shaped bodies and a distinctive black ring around their neck, yellow bands around body, yellow feet and yellow spots. Females are duller. They can grow up to a size of 20cm to 36cm in length, with the males being larger than the females. The average lifespan of this species of lizards is 5 to 8 years.

LIFE CYCLE:When male and female species of the reaches sexual maturity, they start mating each other during the months of May or June. The female will lay anywhere from 3 to 7eggs in early summer in sandy soils, in burrows or under the rocks. The eggs are hatched in days. The parents do not care for the babies when they emerge from eggs, the hatchlings are on their own. The young lizard reaches sexual maturity after one year from the day of hatching. Adult males have bright green scales as well as tan, olive, brown, bluish and yellow scales. Females are less colourful than males.
